Instead of simply cutting checks for their favorite causes, today’s wealthy are seizing the opportunity to micro-manage appropriations and observe the fruits of their philanthropic initiatives. Instead of donating money to a university and walking away, for example, many families now prefer to set up their own scholarship programs, where they can cherry pick the students whose lives they wish to change for the better.
